I'm running the ING New York City Marathon on November 3rd for Boston Children's Hospital because I want to help sick kids get better. Surrounded by new parents and being one ourselves, my wife and I thought it would be most satisfying to do our bit for children in need. In particular, I got inspired to support BCH after the child of our close friends (Manoj & Sue) was treated there successfully for a heart condition. They have been kind enough to share their thoughts here:
"We are excited that Akshay is competing in the NYC marathon and are touched that he chose Boston Children's Hospital (BCH) for his charity. Our older son, Noah was born in 2011 and his pediatrician heard a murmur in his heart beat, which was supposedly common in many newborns. We were referred to BCH for further tests where we were told that Noah had a rare form of heart defect called "Left Coronary Artery Fistula". This devastated us, as he was only 5 days old when he was diagnosed. Because BCH is such a big hospital and deals with so many problems in kids, they knew of this defect, which would have been possibly ignored or undetected in other hospitals. The doctors quickly assured us that because the problem was detected very early in his life they would be able to treat it and Noah would be perfectly fine.
Over the next few months we visited BCH many times. There were kids there from Southern Connecticut, Alabama and as far as China. The doctors and the staff there are just great and we got to see first-hand what a great job they are doing there in treating kids with various problems. They always made us feel at ease and almost like family. When Noah was 8 months old, he was scheduled to have a surgery to correct the defect. We were updated every hour on the status during the surgery and one can only imagine our relief when after a couple of hours we were told that his surgery was successful and he was expected to make a full recovery!!
Noah is now over 2 years old and is going through his "terrible 2" phase, thanks to all the prayers of our friends and family and the skills and expertise of the doctors and the nurse staff. I hope no one has to ever take their kids to a hospital for a major problem, but if you do have to, there is no better hospital than Boston Children's Hospital to treat your children. There is a reason they are #1."When the sickest kids need the best care in the world they come to Boston Children's Hospital. It's an amazing place where the doctors and nurses are compassionate, creative and committed to saving kid's lives. Boston Children's has been nationally ranked as one of the best pediatric hospitals for almost two decades. They care for more than 170,000 patients every year - many with health problems no other hospital in the world can handle. Your donation gives sick kids a chance to get better!
