Why I Walk!

This handsome young man has a diagnosis of Barth Syndrome.  This is a condition that causes heart failure early in infancy, low muscle tone and abnormal mitochondrial function.  He and his family come from out of state every 1-2 months to see cardiology and the metabolism team.  The mutlidisciplinary team we have allows him to see our psychologist to monitor his development, his dietician (Fran Rohr, RD) to monitor his growth and careful adjustment of diet and supplements.  In addition he sees myself (the metabolism NP) and one of our attendings (Dr. James) each visit to caefully monitor his growth and development and overall care in association with our other team members and other specialists within the hospital.  

In addition to the close dietary, medical, and developmental monitoring of each child, care of the whole family; their emotional, social, and financial situation is equally important for us to understand in order for us to then provide the best care to them and their child.
